Commission advances creation of Senior Advisory Committee; commissioners ask minor edits to proposed ordinance

The commission asked staff to prepare an ordinance establishing a Senior Advisory Committee to advise city leaders on programs, services and policies affecting older residents.
Deputy City Manager and Community Development Director Maxine Callaway presented a draft ordinance that would create a five-member advisory body appointed by commissioners to study senior needs, recommend programs and act as a liaison between seniors and city leadership. The draft proposes membership drawn from city residents or employees of businesses located in Tamarac and terms concurrent with the appointing commissioner’s term.
Commissioner Patterson asked the commission to use the shorter name “Senior Advisory Committee” (SAC) and suggested limiting membership to city residents (rather than also allowing business employees) and to ensure the committee was welcoming to the 55-and-up population the city serves. Commissioners indicated they supported the proposed schedule for ordinance adoption: first reading on Feb. 12, application collection in March and initial appointments on the commission agenda in April.
No formal vote was taken during the workshop; staff said they would incorporate the requested edits, post the ordinance for first reading on Feb. 12 and begin recruiting applicants once the ordinance is adopted.
