Sartell–St. Stephen board deadlocks on chair after heated dispute over special meeting and communication

At the Sartell–St. Stephen School District organizational meeting, board members split evenly in nominations for board chair after a lengthy, at times heated discussion about a past special meeting and months of communication failures.

The impasse came after nominations were opened for board chair. Two members were nominated: Tricia (Trish) Neeling and Jen Smith. Board members who supported Smith emphasized her communication and convening work, saying she routinely prompts discussions and follows up with the superintendent to keep the board informed. Other members said trust was eroded by a special June meeting and what they described as poor communication in the months beforehand.
