Worth County discusses $5.45 million office and secondary-roads projects, moves to final design and bidding

Worth County supervisors and staff reviewed concept designs and budget estimates for three related building projects: a consolidated office building, a new Secondary Roads shop and a conservation building remodel. Staff said combined construction budgets for the office and shop total about $5,450,000, excluding site costs, with the office estimated at roughly $880,000 plus $160,000 for engineering, legal and administration.
Staff described changes from earlier concepts: a larger records/storage area in the office, a smaller front vestibule and extra office spaces and cubicles; for the Secondary Roads shop, bay lengths were adjusted (wash bay reduced from 100 to 60 feet) and a dedicated chemical weed-control room and mechanic teardown bay were added. The conservation building remodel was presented as ready to go to bid.
Budget assumptions cited a construction unit cost of about $225 per square foot for the office (staff said some contractors had quoted $300/sq ft, but $225 was used for the estimate) and a shop construction estimate of about $3.7 million. Combined project estimates (office plus shop) were presented at roughly $5.45 million plus site costs. Staff identified some expected site work including sanitary service extensions and paving for the shop site.
Supervisors discussed bid packaging options and sequencing: staff recommended advertising the conservation remodel first (it is ready) and following with final design and bidding for the office and Secondary Roads building, potentially in separate bid packages since the building types are different. Staff proposed a February'March bid schedule to permit construction next year if the budget holds.
Supervisors asked about storage, furnishings and equipment costs for the new buildings. Staff said those costs had not been fully estimated and proposed that county staff (Kimberly) review catalogs and provide a budget estimate for furniture, shelving and equipment; an order-of-magnitude figure of about $100,000 for interiors and furnishings was mentioned as a possibility but not a final figure.
The board directed staff to bring updated drawings, estimates and the necessary resolution to set bid dates at the next meeting. No formal vote to award contracts occurred at this meeting; staff received direction to proceed to final design and to advertise the conservation remodel for bids.
