Board approves one-year extension of Comporium WAN contract; district to seek E-rate reimbursement

The Transylvania County Board of Education approved a one-year extension of the district’s wide-area network (WAN) contract with Comporium, covering July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026.
Mr. Whitlock presented the item, explaining the WAN connects schools to the education center and that the district initially had a five-year contract with optional one-year extensions; this action would execute the fourth optional extension. He said the contract has been reviewed by legal counsel. The district will seek E-rate reimbursement from the Federal Communications Commission; historically the district received about 80% reimbursement from the FCC with the remaining 20% funded from state sources.
A board member moved to approve the contract extension, the motion was seconded and the board voted in favor. No dollar figures were discussed in the public presentation; staff said the funding plan includes applying for E-rate reimbursement and using state funds for any local match.
Staff indicated the contract will continue to support district connectivity and that procurement and legal review were complete for the extension period noted at the meeting.
