School committee discusses South Elementary article; building committee had unanimously approved sending project to special town meeting

The project team reported a roughly $1.25 million reduction in the overall project cost after reviewing the delivery method and moving from a construction-manager-at-risk approach toward design-build, according to a school committee update during the Dec. 17 meeting. The presenters said the change did not alter the educational design required by the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA).
The article before town meeting also adds the parcel on which the current South School sits. By including that parcel, the town and select board would be able to use any remaining appropriation funds to demolish the existing South School after the new building is completed and the committee and town have completed required releases of educational use, the update said. Demolition was estimated in the meeting at about $1.12 million; committee members said a contingency of several million dollars is included in the project estimate to cover changes in material costs and related contingencies.
The building committee plans a meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 9, likely at 7 p.m., and a community forum in late January expected to be held at the middle school. The select board is closing its warrant for the special town meeting, and the school committee said it did not yet have final confirmation that the article will appear on the warrant.
No formal school committee vote to forward the article appeared on the Dec. 17 meeting minutes; the committee discussed the changes and scheduled follow-ups prior to the town meeting vote.
The MSBA-reviewed design remains focused on educational programming and, according to presenters, allows the district to proceed with the proposed plan while seeking to reduce costs where feasible. Additional public engagement dates will be announced by the building committee.
