County manager details Brevard High gym renovation under new interlocal agreement

Jamie Lauder, Transylvania County manager, presented the first facilities project update under a newly negotiated interlocal agreement between the Board of Education and the County, saying the county will provide project-management updates until the district’s project manager is hired.
Lauder told the board that the Brevard High gym project scope initially included roof replacement, window replacement and brick repointing. The subcommittee approved adding a full gym-floor replacement after finding it would cost more to protect the existing floor than to remove and replace it. The county is also proposing an HVAC alternate because existing heating equipment is old and currently mounted inside the structure.
"We have defined scopes. We're just doing mixing the dough at this point," Lauder said, explaining the county’s role in preparing defined scopes and returning findings to the board for decision-making. He said the subcommittee also approved evaluating an expansion of the gym to accommodate a wrestling facility; results of that evaluation will return to the board for additional direction.
Lauder said the Brevard-area and Rosman-area scopes are moving through architect selection, with written responses requested and a subcommittee review to follow. He thanked district staff and the architect attorney for aiding in negotiations and drafting the interlocal legal document.
No formal vote was required for the update. The board and staff discussed that any program-changing alterations (for example, a change that would alter how the facility can be used) would be brought back for board approval.
The county and district said they are reviewing applications for a dedicated project manager; until that hire is complete, Lauder or the assistant county manager will provide project updates to the board.
