Commissioners flag courthouse sidewalk, parking striping and building repairs for quick fixes and bids

Commissioners raised safety and maintenance concerns about the county courthouse and nearby facilities during their Jan. 6 meeting.
Members described a sunken and heaving concrete section at the sheriff’s office entrance and urged a temporary fix while planning a permanent repair. In discussion commissioners proposed placing an angled wedge or a wide board across the uneven joint, painting it yellow for visibility and adding signage to warn visitors until a permanent repair can be scheduled and budgeted.
Staff also reported issues with the building’s mechanical vent and with an aging heater. Maintenance staff said replacement parts had been ordered but the original part was obsolete; staff are evaluating alternative parts and expected to complete the repair when parts arrive. The county will also seek bids to repaint parking stripes, including handicap markings, because the current paint is faded and visibility is poor.
Other minor facilities items recorded in the meeting include ordering a new coffee pot for the courthouse break area and follow-up on several small maintenance tasks. Commissioners asked staff to obtain cost estimates for a permanent sidewalk repair and for restriping the parking area, and to return with bids at a future meeting.
No formal vote was recorded to fund immediate permanent repairs; the commission authorized staff to pursue temporary safety measures and to solicit bids for long-term work.
