Reno County secures $6.13 million state grant for Yoder water and sewer districts

Don Britton, Reno County director of public works, announced that the county has received a state grant of $6,133,100 to address water and sewer compliance for two Yoder-area districts.
Britton said the Yoder 201 and 202 districts have been out of compliance and that the total project cost is large. "It's a $6,133,100 project," he said. Britton told the commissioners the county had already spent "over $300,000 for land to get this done" and had advanced project design. He said staff had applied previously for small-town water- and sewer-infrastructure grants and had sought loan-forgiveness options before receiving this award.
Britton said the grant "kinda takes a load off of just a little bit" and acknowledged project costs could lead to a small rate increase for affected customers. He described the grant as "huge for those people down there." The board did not take formal action at the time of the announcement; staff noted implementation will require further project steps, including managing any local match, construction contracting and rate adjustments at the district level.
The county will proceed with project implementation steps, including final design, procurement and coordination with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and other state programs that administered the grant funding.
