Councilmembers say Caltrans committed to segmented repairs, $60 million for nearby roads

Councilmembers reported on a recent meeting with Caltrans that they said resulted in commitments to repair ancillary roads affected by detours and to consider segmented construction of a larger freeway project.

Councilmember Lauren (first name used on the record) and the vice mayor said they met with Caltrans and other leaders to press for better communication and for repairing roads that receive heavy truck traffic during detours, citing Tenth Street and Sierra Highway as examples. "Caltrans did commit to fixing the ancillary roads," a councilmember said, noting the agency agreed to address three-inch overlays and other repairs on outside roads that were subject to heavy detour traffic.

Members pushed Caltrans to break the larger 26-mile project into smaller segments so work could be staged and traffic impacts reduced. Councilmembers said the meeting focused largely on improving communications about closures and detours and on coordinating safety and law enforcement responses.
