Waukesha City IT staff to develop AI governance framework; no timeline set

Waukesha City IT staff notified the Information Technology Board on Feb. 5 that they will begin developing an AI governance framework to address risks and controls for city use of artificial intelligence.
Greg Viness, speaking for IT, said staff would "be working on, AI governance. So how to handle and control, mitigate all the risks that come with that." He added that there is currently no timeline: "I would say no. Right now, I would say no timeline. This is the first that I've heard of it from him. So I say expect it coming, but I don't have a timeline on it for you."
Board members asked whether employees were already using AI tools and whether controls exist. Viness said: "As of right now, there's nothing in place that's that's preventing anybody from using it." He noted the city currently has limited AI in a service-desk application that suggests example responses for help-desk tickets, but staff had not received formal requests from departments to adopt AI tools. Board members discussed Microsoft Copilot as a likely option because the city uses Microsoft products, but staff said they will evaluate multiple solutions and vet them for vulnerabilities or compliance concerns before recommending an approach.
Staff asked board members to email ideas or questions to Chris and said they will return with proposals as work progresses. No formal action was taken.
