Commission approves halo-lit channel letters to be relocated to South Third Street facade
Summary

The Downtown Commission approved a request to reinstall existing halo-lit channel letters on a building at the northeast corner of South Third and East Capitol Streets, adjacent to the Statehouse.
Applicant representatives said the proposal would mount 6-foot-high letters on a black aluminum raceway attached to vertical steel columns on the building façade. The letters are existing and would be repainted and fitted with new LED lighting; the raceway would be visible but the letters and halo illumination would be the primary visible element.
Colin Brakeman of Day 9 Sign Company and Tom Marano of Edwards Companies answered commissioners’ questions about mounting, material and color. Commissioners raised concerns about proportionality and how the sign would read from the street given adjacent restaurant signage and an elevated walkway; the applicants said restaurant signage and a beer garden are expected on the same block and that separate signage packages would return for review.
Commissioner motioned and the commission approved the application by voice vote.
