Downtown commission approves two rooftop LED signs for Spruce Street property

The Downtown Commission voted to approve a continued application to install two LED-illuminated rooftop signs on a building at Spruce Street and North Middle Street.
The signs would be mounted on a steel frame attached to the elevator overrun above the roofline and measure about 53 feet wide by 26 feet tall (the height reflects three sets of letters). The application had been reviewed previously by the commission in December 2024 and was later approved by the Historic Resources Commission with a minor modification adding a third veil to the design.
Commission staff said the submitted materials included renderings, site and elevation plans, sign and section details, and power and mounting information. Commissioners noted the downtown guidelines do not have specific recommendations for rooftop signs but recommend tower skyline signs identify a building or major tenant and be proportional to a building’s height and mass.
Commissioner Lovrecich moved to approve the application; the motion was seconded and the commission approved the installation by voice vote.
