CSLB explains experience, education credits, certifier rules and B/B2 qualification details

Summary
The Contractors State License Board outlined how education may substitute for some experience credits, the role of certifiers, waiver rules, and the specific experience requirements for B and B2 contractor classifications and owner‑builder credit.
A Contractors State License Board licensing-division representative summarized rules for qualifying for license classifications, including how education credits and certifiers are evaluated.
On education credits, the representative said there are no universal educational requirements but "certain degrees may garner you credit towards your education requirement of 4 years of experience." The representative cautioned that only a few degrees may provide the full 36 months of credit; most degrees typically earn 18–24 months of credit. Applicants should submit official transcripts with their applications for evaluation.
The representative clarified certifier requirements: a certifier "doesn't really need to meet any qualifications. They don't have to be a licensed contractor. Their only qualification is that they have firsthand knowledge of the work that you have performed." Each certifier should complete a separate certification form for the time period they witnessed.
On waivers and prior exams, the representative said some waivers exist and pointed applicants to "7065.1" in the law book for waiver provisions; an applicant who previously passed examinations for a classification within five years may be able to waive retesting for the same classification.
The representative also reviewed the B (general contractor) and B2 (residential remodeling) distinctions and experience requirements: applicants must show 48 months (four years) of trade work within the last 10 years for any classification, and a B2 project requires three separate construction trades on a single residential remodeling project. For owner-builder experience to count, applicants must submit owner-builder project experience forms with permits, square footage and other project details in addition to certifier attestations.
The board advised applicants who are unsure of classifications to email classifications@cslb.ca.gov with detailed lists of trade duties for an official determination.
