Stevens read a list of organizations represented on the committee: Durham Arts Council; North Carolina Central University; Duke University Libraries; North Carolina Central Art Museum; Preservation Durham; Bennett Place; Durham Tech; Durham Bulls Athletic Park; El Centro Hispano; the Museum of Durham History; and Stagville, with the list noted as growing.
The committee selected "Common Ground" as the commemorative theme, Stevens said, describing plans for exhibits, workshops, and interactive programs to highlight shared cultural, artistic, and agricultural heritage, foster intergenerational engagement, and emphasize diversity, history and sustainability.
Commissioners expressed support for the effort during ceremonial remarks. Commissioner Burton said she remembered the nation's bicentennial observance and looked forward to supporting local events. Commissioner Jacobs thanked Stevens for taking a leadership role assembling community partners.
