Durham commissioners adopt resolution celebrating safe return of Keith Siegel

The Durham Board of County Commissioners on Feb. 20 adopted a resolution celebrating the safe return of Keith Siegel and honoring the community and organizations that advocated for his release.

The resolution, read as a ceremonial item during the board's regular session, cited Siegel's resilience during his captivity and praised local advocates, including members of his childhood synagogue, Bethel, for sustained efforts on his behalf.

A family member representing the Siegel family told the board, "I am humbled. I was shocked when I got the email saying that you all were going to put together a resolution in honor of Keith. It means so much to our entire family." The family member accepted a printed, framed copy of the resolution on behalf of the family.

Commissioner Wendy Jacobs congratulated the Siegel family and the Durham Jewish community, saying the moment was "truly a great celebration." Commissioner Valentine also expressed thanks to Bethel's congregation and offered prayers for peace.

The resolution text, as read for the record, referenced the 10/07/2023 terrorist attack in which Siegel was taken captive, described the family's advocacy efforts, and expressed hope for a permanent end to the war affecting the region. The board said it would forward a framed copy of the resolution to members of Siegel's synagogue and to the family.

No formal debate of policy or funding accompanied the ceremonial resolution; the item was presented and recognized as part of the meeting's ceremonial business. The board moved on to subsequent agenda items after the family and community members accepted the resolution.
