The committee approved four nominees to the University of Alabama Board of Trustees: Angus R. Cooper III; Grayson Hall Jr.; Barbara Humphrey; and Myla E. Calhoun. Senator Smitherman made the motion to hear and approve the group en masse, with Senator Allen seconding. The committee recorded a 12-0 vote in favor and approved the individuals.
The committee approved seven nominees to the Agricultural Exhibition Center Corporation—Ralph Williams; Jimmy Parnell; John Starnes; Barrett Vaughn; Thomas Ellis; Joe Lambert; and Brad Fuller—by an 11-0-1 vote after a motion by Senator Williams, seconded by Senator Smitherman. Senator Singleton registered an abstention.
Two nominees to the Department of Rehabilitation Services board, Charles Wilkinson and Kevin Kidd, were approved en masse. The motion to approve was made by Senator Smitherman and seconded by Senator Jones; the committee recorded a 12-0 vote in favor.
Charles Ward was confirmed to the Court of Judiciary after a motion by Senator Smith and a second by Senator Karnley; the vote was recorded as 12-0 in favor.
Holly Brown Owens was approved to the Crime Victims Compensation Commission on a motion by Senator Smitherman, seconded by Senator Cornley; the committee voted 12-0 to confirm her.
The committee approved two nominees to the Department of Human Resources board—Cathy Sawyer and Stan Landers—on a motion by Senator Smitherman (second by Senator Sessions), with a recorded vote of 12-0 in favor.
Mary Pat Lawrence and Hope Curry Scarborough were approved to the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind Board of Trustees after a motion by Senator Carney and a second by Senator Smitherman; the committee recorded a 12-0 vote in favor.
Several nominees addressed the committee briefly while present. Committee members offered verbal thanks and encouragement to appointees; for example, Senator Price said the Agricultural Exhibition Center project would be “a huge asset for our state” and added, “Being involved in this industry for over 50 years, it’s all about the kids at the end of the day.”
