At its Feb. 5 meeting, the Carlsbad Planning Commission elected Roy Means to serve as chair and Commissioner David Huenger to serve as vice chair for the remainder of the 2025 calendar year. Both selections were approved unanimously by the seven-member commission.
Nomination and vote: Commissioner Stein nominated Roy Means for chair; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Hubinger and approved unanimously. For vice chair, Commissioner Stein nominated Commissioner David Huenger; the motion received a second and passed unanimously. The commission followed a process of soliciting interest, taking nominations, and voting during the department reports portion of the agenda.
Why it matters: The chair and vice chair preside over commission meetings, set agenda procedures in collaboration with staff, and represent the commission in interactions with other city bodies. Several commissioners noted experience and even-handedness as criteria; one commissioner said rotating leadership provides learning opportunities for longer-serving members.
Context and procedure: The commission chair announced a consent-style process for nominations and then called for motions and second; both leadership votes were recorded as unanimous. With the selections complete, the commission adjourned the public hearing portion of the meeting and continued to departmental reports and other items.
