Committee approves bill shifting state library and public-media commissions under Department of Education; library and PBS leaders warn of risks

Senator Sullivan, sponsor of SB 1-84, said the bill “eliminates the state library board and the AETN board and puts those underneath the Department of Education.” He described the change as an efficiency and alignment measure: “They already fall under… the department of education” and the boards “meet once a quarter” and rarely take consequential independent actions, he said. Sullivan said the change would consolidate leadership and align the institutions with state education goals.
