The Emporia USD Board of Education voted 7-0 to hire the Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB) to conduct the district's superintendent search and approved the earlier timeline option that begins community outreach and the public survey in mid-February.
Board and staff described the steps KASB will take, including community surveys (with a Spanish option), focus groups, screening-committee work and marketing to broaden the candidate pool. District staff noted KASB was used for the district's prior superintendent search, and board members said KASB consultants are familiar with the district.
Board members chose "option A" for a timeline that would run the community survey from Feb. 18 through Feb. 24 (meeting discussion provided two options; the board selected the earlier schedule) and move quickly into candidate screening and interviews. Staff indicated marketing materials will be released immediately and that a community survey and focus groups will inform candidate profile and screening.
The search follows an announcement that Superintendent Dr. Allison Harder will retire on June 30; the board discussed timing so the new hire could be in place during the district's transition. The KASB agreement and timeline were both approved by unanimous vote.
The board did not finalize a hire at this meeting; additional meetings and interview steps were described in the timeline.
