Board reviews policy first readings that raise inventory and bidding thresholds

At the Feb. 20 meeting the superintendent told the Fairfield Union Local School District board that five policy revisions were presented for first reading and that some include updated dollar thresholds required by the state.

Staff noted the inventory capitalization threshold — the per-item dollar amount that determines whether equipment is tracked as capital — would move from $5,000 to $10,000. The bidding threshold was described in the presentation as changing from $15,000 to $75,000. Board members were informed these values were adjusted by the state to account for inflation and had not been updated in several years.

The policy revisions were presented for first reading only; board members were invited to raise questions and the superintendent said they could contact him before the next meeting or discuss the items at the next session. No final vote on these policies occurred at this meeting.

The superintendent and board emphasized these changes reflect state-directed thresholds; the district is not independently altering bidding rules beyond adopting the updated state limits. The presentation called attention to inventory and bidding provisions within the district’s purchasing and capital-asset policies.

Because the policies were at first reading, the board was not asked to adopt them at the meeting; staff said the policies will return for further consideration and possible adoption at a later meeting.
