Campus High School administrators told the Haysville board about a student-led mock fatal-crash event planned as an FCCLA STAR project to educate students about impaired and distracted driving.
Dr. Fulton and Campus High staff said two students—a freshman and a sophomore—approached staff about staging a mock crash. The planned event would set up a staged crash scene in the school parking lot, include theater students acting as victims, and involve local emergency responders; a speaker in authority (the district hopes to include highway patrol) would address the assembled students.
The event is planned as an hour-long, opt-in activity for juniors and seniors during fourth block; students who do not wish to attend will remain in their scheduled class. The district emphasized safeguards: counselors will offer support to students who have experienced traumatic incidents, and the presentation acknowledged the simulation could be triggering for some students. Staff also noted funeral-service professionals are involved in planning because one of the student leaders has family in that field.
Board members praised the student initiative and the planning detail, and asked about opt-out procedures; administrators said counseling staff will be available and that participation is voluntary. The board raised no objections. The presentation was informational and no board vote was taken.
