Board hears update on Kingland outlet; DNR and state fish-and-game expected to inspect

Worth County supervisors were briefed on drainage work at a Kingland project after staff exposed an outlet that had been underwater.
A supervisor said county crews dug an open ditch to get flow at the outlet for a Kingland lateral; the outlet had been underwater and covered. Staff described extending the open ditch roughly 500 feet, placing pipe and restoring the outlet above the water level so the tile could flow. The supervisor said he received a call from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and that Iowa Fish and Game (as referenced in the meeting) planned to meet the supervisor and county staff on site the following day to review the situation.
County staff emphasized that no decision to fill the outlet would be made by the DNR or other agencies without returning to the board: “If they want us to fill part of that back in, they’re gonna have to come back in here and request it,” a supervisor said. The supervisor also said several downstream property owners who have added tile to the outlet were likely to want the outlet kept open.
The board did not take a formal vote on Kingland during the meeting. Staff said they would attend the DNR visit and report back to the board if any party requests a change to the outlet or a formal fill-in action.
