District says Niswonger tutoring grant ending; continuing program would cost about $200,000

District staff told the Jan. 25 Cannon County Schools workshop that a tutoring program funded by a Niswonger Foundation grant is ending at year's end and said continuing the program at the same level would cost "a little over $200,000." The presenter said the district has used ESSER funds previously to cover RTI educational assistance but cannot sustain the full tutoring model in the general fund without additional revenue.
"The big hit is our tutoring," the district staff member said. "We were fortunate to get the grant from Niswonger. The grant ends at the end of the year. We haven't heard if they're rewriting a grant somewhere or they're going to try to extend this program. It's been wonderful." The presenter added that matching the full tutoring model would cost about $200,000 and that the district currently has 221 students who require tutoring services.
Staff said the district had continued to pay for RTI assistance using ESSER funds last year and that some tutoring positions will likely need to be added to meet state requirements: "you'll have to add some tutoring positions because we have 221 students that are needing tutoring," the presenter said.
No motion or vote was taken; staff recommended district leaders evaluate options and prioritize tutoring needs alongside other budget pressures.
