County staff: FDOT will fund Center Hill Bridge construction through county incentive grant program

Chris Sempron, assistant county manager, briefed the board on an award through the county incentive grant program to fund construction of the Center Hill Bridge.
Sempron said the county had exhausted federal funding avenues — including applications to the Federal Highway Administration's Bridge Investment Program — and negotiated with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to secure state funding for construction. He said the project has completed design review with FDOT and the current action would fund the construction phase.
Sempron said the grant generally requires a 50% local match. Hardee County submitted a match waiver to FDOT on the grounds that the community is designated a rural area of opportunity; FDOT approved the waiver and agreed to fund the county's full request of about $1.8 million. Sempron told commissioners the award should be sufficient to complete the work, based on county estimates.
Commissioners congratulated staff and noted the project has been long-running; Sempron said the board will be asked to proceed with funding in the board meeting on Jan. 16. No formal vote on the construction contract or final acceptance was recorded during the Jan. 2 workshop.
