Council adopts ordinance to regulate peddlers, itinerant merchants and solicitors

The Lewisburg Town Council unanimously approved an ordinance Dec. 10 to regulate peddlers, itinerant merchants and door-to-door solicitors.
Council member (Mr. Slater) said the town historically used zoning enforcement to address transient vendors but that a standalone ordinance provides clearer, more appropriate enforcement tools for law enforcement and staff. "I've drafted this for the purpose of creating some clarity where there has, in my judgment, some ambiguity and making a very clear demarcation..." he said.
Council discussed enforcement procedures: staff or police would present the ordinance to individuals selling goods without permitting and require them to vacate the site. Members clarified the ordinance does not regulate yard sales, which remain a zoning/code matter.
Ending: Council adopted the ordinance and directed staff to enforce it; councilmembers said the measure is intended to reduce recurring itinerant retail activity that has caused complaints.
