Council approves $35,000 cleanup contract after state flags town landfill violations

Town staff told the council on Dec. 10 that the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality had notified Lewisburg that a town property used for spoil piles and yard waste at the industrial park was operating as an unpermitted site and needed cleanup.
"Amanda Thompson of NCDEQ's division of solid waste... met with me on-site" and informed staff the town was in violation and had 60 days to clean the site, a staff member (Mr. Brown) said. Staff asked the council to authorize the town administrator to enter a contract with KB's Hauling and Site Development for $35,000 to mulch yard waste and transport spoil piles and other material to permitted disposal facilities.
Council discussed tipping fees and whether the expense was in the current budget. Town staff said funds could be moved from an existing administration appropriation in the general fund to cover the contract and that failing to act risked fines for noncompliance. After discussion the council approved the resolution to award the contract.
Why it matters: the action responds to a state enforcement notice and aims to bring town property into compliance with solid-waste regulations. Staff said the town will stop using the site for spoil and will document how much is stored and removed going forward.
