Board approves weight-room equipment, bleacher replacement and construction bid packages; several procurements total millions

The Saline Area Schools Board of Education approved multiple facility purchases and construction contract recommendations during its Jan. 14 meeting, including weight-room equipment for the high school, replacement bleachers, and contract awards for a middle-school recreation complex and related renovation work.

Weight-room equipment: The board approved a recommendation to purchase Sorenex (spelled in meeting backup as “Sorenex/SoreneX”) strength and conditioning equipment for the new Saline High School weight room. The vendor and procurement were presented by Rex Clary, executive director of operations. The transcript contains inconsistent dollar-figure transcription for that motion; the meeting backup and presentation described the equipment purchase as within project budget but the audio transcript rendered the amount unclearly. The board voted in favor and approved the purchase by voice vote.

Bleacher replacement: The board approved a $295,663 contract from Intercal (contractor name as stated in the board materials) to replace east and west gymnasium bleacher seating in the main high school gym. The administration said the existing bleachers are more than 20 years old, have required recurring repairs (more than $19,000 in repairs since spring 2022) and present safety concerns; the work will be staged over two summers to align with the district’s sinking-fund plans. Middle-school recreation complex and parking (Bid Package No. 3): The board approved bid package No. 3 for the middle-school recreation complex and parking-lot work, with the construction contract recommendation to Clark Construction (senior project manager Matt Wilikowski introduced for Clark). The transcript records an approved construction amount of $18,255,709 for the bid package as presented by the administration and discussed at the meeting, with additional line items for subcontract work, architect services and permits noted in the board materials. The administration said the construction portion of the project is running under the bond budget by roughly $1 million. The motion passed on a voice vote.

Bid Package No. 4 — equipment for interior renovations: The board approved purchase recommendations for specialty equipment tied to the middle-school renovation and interior work (Bid Package No. 4) in the amount of $48,981 as presented by operations staff. The board approved the motion by voice vote.

Board discussion focused on safety, vendor selection and alignment with project budgets. Operations staff said the Sorenex equipment was chosen after teacher and coach review and that the vendor’s safety and adjustability features weighed strongly in the recommendation. For bleachers, staff said the project will add a row to alter step heights and include new guards and handrails to improve safety.
