Olentangy Local board outlines steps to implement Ohio’s Senate Bill 104 before Feb. 25 effective date

The Olentangy Local School Board of Education on Feb. 20 heard details from Superintendent Mister Meyer about how the district plans to implement Senate Bill 104, which takes effect Feb. 25 and requires schools to designate restrooms, locker rooms and similar facilities based on individuals’ biological sex as defined in the legislation.

Mister Meyer told the board that principals, athletic directors and counselors have met to understand the law and the district’s expectations, and that administrators have begun conversations with impacted students and families to explore accommodations and address individual concerns. "The legislation also impacts overnight and out of state field trips," Meyer said, and the district will "continue to work with students, families, and coaches, and advisors as needed." He said an updated FAQ will be posted to the district website.

Board President Mister Lester framed the district’s response as balancing legal compliance with its stated values. "What I want to be very, very clear about is that our fundamental value of putting together a safe and supportive and welcoming and inclusive environment for all of our students and families is not going to change," Lester said during his president’s report. He added that single-occupancy restrooms remain available to anyone: "This bill does not impact the use of single occupancy restrooms. Anyone can use a single occupancy restroom."

District staff said buildings will clearly label single-occupancy restrooms as "staff" or "family" and that boys' and girls' restrooms will be labeled consistent with the law. Superintendent Meyer described meetings with families as intended to "understand the secondary and tertiary impacts and provide support that we can." The board did not take a formal vote specific to SB 104 at the Feb. 20 meeting; the district said implementation steps are administrative and will include policy reviews through the board’s policy committee where applicable.

The board and administration also noted that the new state requirement affects overnight and out-of-state student travel; staff will coordinate with trip leaders and families to address logistics and accommodations. Meyer said school personnel have been prepared to answer questions and that the FAQ aims to address common concerns.

No changes to district policy were adopted at the meeting; board members said policy committee review and any required readings will follow the administrative implementation work.
