Jackson City Council appoints Chris Simpson as police chief, swears him in

The Jackson City Council on Feb. 11 unanimously approved the appointment of Chris Simpson as chief of the Jackson Police Department, with the clerk administering an oath that sets his start date as Feb. 22, 2025.

The appointment was added to the consent calendar and approved without recorded opposition. Following the vote, the clerk sworn Simpson into office: "Do you solemnly swear to support the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution of this state, and faithfully perform the duties of police chief ... commencing on 02/22/2025?" Simpson responded, "I do."

Why this matters: The move completes a planned leadership transition in the department as outgoing Chief Elmer Hitt retires after nearly three decades of service. Council members and community speakers offered public congratulations during citizens comments and in the council comment period.

Council members who spoke during the meeting praised Hitt's service and welcomed Simpson. Council member Dunn said he appreciates Hitt's work and said he looks forward to working with Simpson. Council member Wood and others thanked the finance team for a clean audit and offered their congratulations to Simpson.

Simpson addressed the council after being sworn and offered brief remarks thanking the council, the city workforce and his family. "I look forward to the opportunity of serving as your police chief," he said, adding he is "not new to Jackson" and described himself as "an old foot soldier who likes to complete the mission." He also acknowledged the officers and family members present.

The council noted a reception would follow the meeting so residents and staff could greet the new chief. The city manager invited department members and the public to the reception in the lobby.

No formal changes to department policy or budget were made at the meeting; the action recorded was the formal appointment and swearing-in of the new chief.
