Port Jervis to send students to Special Olympics May 17; district will provide busing

Tanya Duryea, assistant superintendent for pupil personnel services, told the board on Feb. 11 that the Port Jervis City School District will participate in the Special Olympics on May 17 at Goshen for the second consecutive year.
Duryea said 22 elementary students from EME and HBE—ages roughly 8 through 12—are scheduled to participate, with two middle‑school students pending. She credited school psychologist Phoebe Harris and certified occupational therapy assistant Britney Young for serving as liaisons and organizers.
Duryea said the district provided busing last year to reduce transportation barriers and that the district will again provide busing and assist families with transport this year. She described the event as part of the district—s effort to remove barriers and expand extracurricular opportunities for students with disabilities.
Duryea also reported staff are conducting visits to preschool‑age students with disabilities across multiple local providers and sites to identify needs and better forecast special‑education program costs and services.

Duryea said a fuller breakdown of special‑education budget drivers will be presented at the March 11 meeting; she asked the board and community to mark May 17 on their calendars for the Special Olympics event.
