Canton council: key actions and unanimous votes on Dec. 5 meeting

At its Dec. 5 meeting the Canton City Council took a series of procedural and consent actions. Several items were approved unanimously and one public hearing was postponed for further public input.
Postponed public hearing: Council voted to postpone the public hearing listed as item 5C (annexation/rezone/master plan related to ANNX2409001, RZON2409002, M2409003 for a 57‑acre residential proposal that staff asked to be re‑advertised). Council announced “all members voted for the motion.” The postponement was made to allow the applicant time to hold an additional public input meeting and re‑advertise the hearing for the city’s first February meeting.
Agenda and minutes: Council approved the meeting agenda as amended and approved draft minutes for the Nov. 21 meeting; both motions carried with all members voting in favor.
Consent agenda: The council approved the consent agenda items by unanimous vote. Items included: the locally administered project (LAP) recertification application (mayor to sign); approval of a traffic signal proposal to North Cherokee Electrical, Inc., in the amount of $59,375; Amendment 5 to the Professional Engineering Services Agreement with H2O Innovation for operations and maintenance; and updated municipal services agreements with Cherokee County for bailiff/control services and First Appearance Hearings.
Amicus brief resolution: Council approved a resolution authorizing the mayor to join an amicus brief in Chang v. City of Milton, an appeal before the Georgia Supreme Court regarding objects in the right of way. The motion was approved with all members present voting aye.
Appointments: The mayor’s slate of appointments to boards and commissions was confirmed unanimously. Reappointments and new appointments included a reappointment to the Canton Housing Authority and new nominations to the Downtown Development Authority and Main Street board; council confirmed the slate by voice vote.
Other items: Council heard informational staff reports, received presentations and opened two public hearings (one later postponed). No final zoning or annexation decisions were voted on Dec. 5.
