ARB approves 5th Third ATM surround sign after staff review; board finds limited off-site impact

The Wellington Architectural Review Board on Jan. 22 approved signage around an ATM at the Olive Verde outparcel building occupied by Fifth Third Bank, allowing a technical deviation for an additional secondary wall sign and larger sign area after staff review.
Planning staff reported the Olive Verde outparcel originally had signage approvals in 2023, but Fifth Third Bank later installed an ATM surround with additional branding without prior ARB sign approval. Staff said code permits a principal wall sign plus up to two secondary wall signs; the north façade already contained a secondary wall sign, so the new ATM surround required deviation for an additional secondary sign and for sign area and height. Staff recommended approval with conditions to avoid off-site impacts given the sign’s internal, drive-through/ATM pocket location.
Greg Waldo of BDG Architects, representing Fifth Third Bank, told the board the ATM vendor added the surround late in the project and the bank seeks ARB approval to keep the feature. Waldo said the element aids recognition and safety: “we do feel that it provides additional safety and that it's easy to be recognizable to the ATM,” he said. He also noted landscaping and the set-back from the state road reduce visibility from the right of way.
Board members discussed sign color and lighting. Staff said the lighting behind the panel is white LEDs, but the acrylic face produces a subtle green appearance consistent with the bank’s logo; this color was previously allowed for the bank’s logo elsewhere on the building. A board member said the location and landscaping make the sign primarily internal to the center and unlikely to cause off-site visual impacts.
A motion to approve the petition as presented passed without recorded objections. The approval allows the ATM surround signage to remain under the conditions discussed in the staff report; staff will incorporate conditions into the permit process and verify the lighting and materials comply with the ARB approval.
