ARB approves Wellington Tennis Center Padel facility design; village partnered operator proposed

The Wellington Architectural Review Board on Jan. 22 approved elevations, materials and signage for a proposed padel (paddle) facility at the Wellington Tennis Center, part of a public–private partnership that will add seven courts and supporting kiosks.
Planning staff entered files into the record and told the board the tennis center, relocated in 2015, already contains 21 tennis courts and a clubhouse; the padel facility will occupy a 15.53-acre property’s east side. Staff said the Village of Wellington executed a public–private partnership in 2024 with World Padel Wellington to design, construct, operate and maintain the facility.
Juan C. David, representing the applicant, described the design as intentionally subordinate to the main clubhouse: “we didn't want to mimic and replicate the main building. We thought that we didn't want to compete. We just want to subordinate our little buildings as a kiosk,” he said, explaining the proposed contemporary, light-colored kiosks, seating areas with umbrellas, and two gazebo structures. The architect noted the proposed white aluminum frames and materials match the existing clubhouse palette and that the proposed wall signage complies with code; no technical deviations were requested.
Staff recommended approval with conditions listed in the staff report. Board members asked about programming and whether the facility would operate like the Village’s tennis programs; staff said details about operations (private operator vs. village-run programs for residents) would be addressed outside the ARB’s design review. A board member said, “Padel's becoming like the fastest growing sport in the world,” and expressed support for the project.
A motion to approve the petition as presented passed with no objections recorded in the meeting transcript. The approval covers materials, colors and signage for the padel courts, kiosk buildings, and associated site elements; staff will proceed with permit review and finalize conditions listed in the staff report.
