Indio council names six City Hall conference rooms after local figures after extended discussion

The Indio City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to name six conference rooms in the new City Hall after local historical figures and community contributors.
After a lengthy discussion about representation and historical recognition, council settled on the following six names for conference rooms: Chief Cabazon; Lewis and Audrey Strange; A.G. Tingaman; Sherry Itzematsu; Leroy Polley; and June McCarroll. Mayor Glenn Miller said the list came from a Community Services Commission recommendation and from suggestions circulated by the mayor pro tem.
Councilmembers debated which names to include and where other honorees might be recognized in future facilities. Councilmember Oscar Ortiz argued for including a local tribal leader to acknowledge pre‑settlement history and asked that the record recognize Chief Cabazon. Councilmember Furman and others urged equity in recognition and suggested additional locations (transportation center, parks) for names that did not fit in the six available conference rooms.

Public comments and context: Several public commenters and attendees with family ties thanked the council for the recognition and noted multi‑generation contributions by families such as the Stranges. Councilmembers noted existing memorials and facilities already bearing some honorees' names and discussed returning memorials (for example, a gazebo previously associated with Doug York) to other city sites.
Next steps: Staff will forward the approved list to the sign vendor and prepare informational plaques or materials explaining each honoree's significance to Indio.
