Board approves Bernadine Sitz reroof contract, OKs purchase of autonomous floor equipment and advances Garfield project

Bernadine Sitz reroof: Board members received bids from four contractors. The low bid, from Meridian Roofing Solutions, was $489,419; other bids included $786,525 (DV Douglas), $621,286 (Weathercraft) and $993,000 (Diamond Roofing). GMC Architects (GMCN) reviewed the bids and recommended awarding the contract to Meridian, stating the firm confirmed its proposal included all scope items and that it was prepared to proceed. Board member Nathan moved to award to Meridian; John seconded. The board approved the award.
Brandon Anderson, director of plant facilities, told the board the bids came in well under the long-range plan budget and said staff prefers local contractors when possible but must consider taxpayers’ dollars. Anderson also discussed bonding and warranty matters and confirmed bids are typically valid for 30 days. Board members expressed concern about Meridian’s submitted duration of 270 days versus other bids (roughly 100–180 days) and asked staff to negotiate a narrower construction window and to confirm liquidated damages or other contract protections.
Autonomous scrubber and sweeper purchase: The board approved purchasing two autonomous machines (a scrubber and a sweeper) from PureZone/Purchased vendor for plant facilities. The agenda packet listed an approximate amount of $73,316.25; during discussion the staff cited a total cost of $73,003.16. The machines include batteries, charging stations and warranty options; staff said battery life is expected to be about 10 years and that the vendors offered extended warranties and workstation equipment. The motion to approve the purchase passed.
Garfield Elementary roofing design: With the Bernadine Sitz project coming in under budget, staff asked the board to approve a services proposal from GMCN to progress the Garfield Elementary reroof toward design and bid documents so the work could be scheduled for the summer. The board approved moving forward; presenters warned the Garfield work would need to be tightly scheduled for summer months because of site and traffic constraints.
Why it matters: the district is managing deferred-maintenance needs across many campuses. Board members repeatedly referenced the long-range facilities plan and sought to balance cost, schedule and contractor accountability.
