A resident urged the Oro Valley Town Council on Jan. 8 to restore and maintain Vistoso Pond, presenting measurements and cost estimates and asking the town to fund remediation.
Richard Beam said he and a retired professional engineer walked and measured the pond together and concluded the pond is 2.41 acres and “holds 17.31 acre feet of water.” Beam told the council the cost to fill the pond “at city golf course rates is $37,890 and includes 2 complete fills to mitigate the evaporation that takes place during the year.”
Beam compared that volume to the town’s larger golf‑course lakes and said the pond’s water needs are modest by comparison. He estimated a new aeration system at roughly $8,000 with an annual electrical operating cost near $700, and said “it will cost $50,000 a year to get this pond up and running, all costs in.” He asked the council to spend that amount to restore the pond so nearby residents and users could again enjoy a water feature.
Beam emphasized the numbers came from a civic volunteer and a retired professional engineer who performed measurements, and he urged the council to consider the cost relative to other municipal water uses. The town took the comment under advisement; no funding decision was made at the meeting.
