City updates: Fire Station 6 nears handover, Burns Road playground and community center on track, EOC/PD renovation continues

City project managers gave the Palm Beach Gardens City Council a multi-project update covering Fire Station 6, the Burns Road playground and the Burns Road Community Center renovation, and the police department (PD) expansion and emergency operations center (EOC) renovation.
Todd Ingalls, the city engineer, showed photos of Fire Station 6 and said the roof is "dried in," windows and garage doors are installed and interior finishes are under way; the city expects to receive the building from the contractor in April and will need several weeks to outfit the station before it opens for service.
Cory Wilder, deputy community services administrator for operations, reviewed the Burns Road playground. He said equipment arrived and installation began in January, shade infrastructure posts are installed, turf installation is scheduled for March 17 and the playground is expected to open in April. The playground is designed to serve ages roughly 6 months to 12 years and includes two climbing towers, slides and shade systems.
Angela Brown, deputy community services administrator, and other staff presented the Burns Road Community Center renovation. Brown said the project is in its 16th month of construction, will reopen to the public for summer camp in June and is scheduled to reach construction completion in April. The renovation includes about 26,650 square feet of renovated space and roughly 32,000 square feet of addition to the 1980 portion of the facility; site improvements include expanded parking, sidewalks and wayfinding.
Jake McCarty, director of public works, summarized the PD expansion and EOC renovation, describing a multi-phase move of IT and dispatch to allow renovations. He said dispatch will expand into six new stations, the project involves complex utility reconnections and foundation work between existing buildings, and the contractor is working to reroute drains and stormwater. Brown and staff said completion of the combined PD/EOC project is targeted for October.
Council members asked timing questions and were told the playground is slated to open in April and the community center will be ready in time for June summer-camp operations.
