The Georgia House Insurance Committee approved House Bill 182 on a voice vote after a sponsor presentation that said the measure clarifies exclusions in group life insurance policies for service members.
The bill, described to the committee as a Department of Insurance request, would make clear that being on active duty, by itself, is not a valid reason to deny a life-insurance claim. State Representative (presenter of HB 182) told the committee that in many individual policies the exclusion language refers to an "act of war," while group policies had used the phrase "active duty," which could be interpreted to deny claims for service members not in combat zones. "This just makes it clear that being on active duty in and of itself is not a valid reason to deny a claim," the presenter said.
Committee members asked no substantive questions and there were no public comments. A motion to "do pass" was made and adopted by voice vote; the committee chair announced the measure passed.
The committee record indicates the change responds to a clarification sought by the Department of Insurance about how exclusion language is interpreted in group life policies. The transcript does not include a roll-call tally or named votes for the motion; the committee’s approval was recorded by voice vote.
