The Sandpoint Urban Forestry Commission held its inaugural meeting at 10:04 a.m. Dec. 3 in the council chambers at Sandpoint City Hall, where members received training on open-meeting and public-records rules, reviewed the commission’s duties, and elected officers for the body’s first term.
City forester Eric Bush, the commission’s staff liaison, opened the meeting with introductions and an overview of the commission’s responsibilities and near-term priorities. Bush told members the city had been awarded an IRA grant from the Idaho Department of Lands via the U.S. Department of Agriculture for $100,000 and said about half of those funds are planned for updating the city’s tree inventory and the remainder for plantings, maintenance and hazard removals.
The commission’s orientation included a legal briefing from Zach Jones, the city’s contract counsel, who stressed compliance with Idaho’s open meetings and public-records rules and cautioned members against using personal email or reply-all when discussing commission business. "Anytime you meet with more than a quorum, so 3 or more of you, you have to follow open meeting laws," Jones said.
