County public relations staff proposes web portal for plans, expanded wildfire-zone outreach

Valley County's public relations update at the Dec. 16 meeting urged better public access to county planning documents and more focused outreach ahead of wildfire season.
Mackenzie (public relations) told commissioners people frequently ask for the county's comprehensive plan and master transportation plan and proposed a dedicated website button linking strategic documents including the hazard mitigation and community wildfire protection plans. "I think we just need to provide some of this information in a little easier access format and then highlight what the county's been doing," Mackenzie said.
She recommended social-media posts linking to the plans and coordinated outreach as the county updates documents. Mackenzie also proposed working with fire staff to publish wildfire-zone maps and a public education campaign describing how residents in each zone should respond during an emergency. "By the time that we head into wildfire again next year, we need to work with Juan and get out all the zones, how people learn what zones they are," she said.
Commissioners supported the idea of more educational communications and tying outreach to recently completed plans, including a housing plan to be released by the local economic development council and a financial plan commissioners had adopted.
No formal action or funding decisions were taken at the meeting; staff said they would follow up with county IT and emergency management to draft materials and a schedule for next year's outreach.
