The City Council approved staff's recommendation to install permanent stop signs on South Anza Street at the intersection with Redwood Avenue following a traffic study that identified limited sight distance and multiple collisions.
Olga Reyes, principal civil engineer in the Traffic Division, presented the request and noted the intersection is a T intersection controlled by stop signs on Redwood Avenue but not on South Anza. Reyes said South Anza functions as a residential collector used as a bypass of a nearby arterial and has a 25 mph posted limit. Staff reported approximately 4,030 vehicles per day at the intersection and seven collisions in the past five years, four of which were broadside (T-bone) collisions.
Reyes said corner sight distance from Redwood Avenue to South Anza was below the Caltrans-recommended 280 feet for a 25 mph roadway and that staff applied the City of San Diego point system and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices; the intersection tallied 32 points, exceeding the typical 30-point threshold. Based on those findings, "staff recommends that the City Council approve the installation of stop signs on South Anza Street at the intersection of Redwood Avenue," Reyes said.
No public speakers opposed the change. A councilmember moved to adopt the staff recommendation and the motion carried by unanimous vote.
Staff will proceed with installation of stop signs at the intersection; the council did not adopt additional traffic-calming measures at the meeting.
