Staff reports: Denton receives Bird City designation; DOE voucher approval and incentive updates discussed

City staff announced Denton City had been awarded Bird City certification by Texas Parks and Wildlife. Karen, identified in the meeting as a lead on the effort, said the designation was a multi-partner effort and that the city will recertify in three years. Staff described a forthcoming public celebration.
Staff also reported this week they were notified the Department of Energy approved the city’s voucher program allocation under the Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant (EECBG). Staff said the city will move forward with the voucher program; no grant amounts were specified in the meeting record and staff said they would follow up with the city’s grant administrator to provide details on two previously submitted but not awarded grants.
On incentives, staff said GreenSuns and EV incentive applications are in process. Committee members asked whether lease vehicles qualify for EV rebates; staff said the application and guide are being finalized and that leased EVs will be accepted once the program is live. Staff estimated the committee had received eight e-bike rebate applications to date but did not provide a detailed breakdown between e-bike categories.
Staff also noted a rescheduled beginner composting class (moved to a Saturday at South Branch Library due to snow), and provided a quarterly education update and list of upcoming classes. No formal action was taken on these items; they were presented as staff reports and updates.
