League City names two youth baseball fields for Malcolm Daley and Brad Harris

Dr. Lynn Davis, a resident who helped start the local pony-league program, urged the council during public comment to recognize volunteers who have coached and supported youth baseball for decades. Dr. Davis told the council the league began with four teams, that volunteers raised funding and prepared fields with little city support, and that the volunteers’ work produced numerous district and regional championships over roughly three decades.
The council moved to approve a resolution to name the two fields and then amended the motion to specify the signage wording as the "Daley Field" and the "Harris Field." The amended motion passed with no votes against.
The naming recognizes community members who, council members said during discussion, devoted years of unpaid time to youth sports. Council members noted that Malcolm Daley died recently and that the naming would honor his longtime service alongside Brad Harris.
In public comment, Dr. Davis recounted the league’s history and the volunteers’ involvement: the league was started when there were no local fields; volunteers recruited coaches and sponsors, maintained fields, and supported a pipeline to local high schools. Dr. Davis said the volunteers did not seek city funding and sometimes provided materials and labor themselves.
Mayor Nick Long offered brief remarks thanking the volunteers and noted regret that Daley would not be alive to see the recognition. The council then voted to approve the resolution as amended.
The resolution will update signage at the Chester Davis Sportsplex to read Daley Field and Harris Field. The motion to approve and the subsequent amendment were passed during the regular council meeting; council records show no votes against the resolution.
Looking ahead, the council returned to the consent agenda and continued with the remainder of the evening’s business.
