Parks staff told the Rockwall City Park Board about the scope of routine maintenance, recent storm damage repairs and an expanded in‑house equipment repair and training program.
A parks staff member described the department’s day‑to‑day responsibilities, which include urban forestry, litter control, weekly property inspections, pool maintenance, irrigation repairs, restrooms, athletic fields, trail systems, lighting and park asset maintenance. The staff member said the department maintains a fleet of 22 trucks, 17 trailers, about 40 gas‑powered handheld and non‑handheld pieces of equipment, eight finish mowers, seven heavy equipment tractors and four medium tractors.
Staff described a shift toward more in‑house maintenance and operator training. Travis said staff attempted to keep more work internal this year and used the repair work as training for operators — from changing blades to checking engine compression and replacing parts. "Bridal is probably better repairing the equipment than the manufacturers," Travis said, noting the change saved the department money in some cases but that a few specialized pieces were still sent to vendors.
Board members raised a few site‑specific maintenance items: a permanent pipe rail will replace split rail at Myers (the department plans to use the Myers installation as a template for similar upgrades citywide), and staff have been addressing wind damage at the harbor and other parks following recent storms. Staff also said they are disassembling and salvaging wood from one barn for possible reuse at a future facility and are managing debris removal with roll‑offs as needed.
A parks staff member said most vehicle and equipment repairs are handled in‑house unless a vendor is required for specialized service. Staff also noted constraints on specialized tools and lifts for larger work, and that the in‑house program included operator buy‑in by having operators maintain their assigned equipment under supervision.
The board did not take formal action on these operational items; staff requested board awareness and said they will return with updates as projects proceed.
