ARB chooses medium‑bronze metal panel for High School Center 2 after split vote

Margaret (staff) presented the options and noted previous ARB guidance to consider alternatives to the originally proposed dark bronze because of the site’s prominent mountain backdrop. Kylan Truly of Quinn Edmonds Architects, representing Albemarle County Public Schools, explained design intent: masonry elements are intended to reference local natural materials and a third, darker metal element was introduced in earlier studies to provide contrast with brick and storefront framing. The design team presented renderings of the three candidate colors and said the contractor’s available product line constrained the exact shade for lighter grays.
Board members were split. Some said a lighter gray better integrates with the existing campus and the mountain backdrop; others said the darker colors provide a useful third material that animates the addition and helps the building read as a distinct piece of campus architecture. The board first voted on a motion to approve the light gray; that motion failed. A second motion to approve a medium bronze passed on roll call.
Motion and outcome: The board approved the medium‑bronze metal panel color for High School Center 2 (roll call ayes recorded for Mr. Henningsen, Mr. Hancock and Mr. Stoner; Mr. Vanderwerf recorded a no). The board directed the applicant to proceed with final color selection consistent with the chosen medium bronze and to provide final samples as part of the ARB administrative review and staff administrative approvals called for in prior conditions.
Next steps: The applicant will supply manufacturer product data and samples consistent with the medium bronze color for staff administrative approval and return to ARB only if outstanding conditions require further board review.
