City of El Paso council certifies Dec. 14 runoff results and declares winners

The City of El Paso City Council voted unanimously Friday, Dec. 20, 2024, to adopt a resolution canvassing the Dec. 14 runoff election returns and declaring the candidates who received majorities elected to office.
The resolution recited that the runoff election was called by the council under the City Charter and state law, that proper notice and appointment of election officers occurred, and that the election returns had been duly made and certified. The council recorded the results reported in the returns and declared candidates who received more than 50% of the votes elected.
As set out in the resolution, the returns show Bernard U. Johnson receiving 19,630 votes and Bridal Kennedy receiving 15,343 votes in the mayoral runoff; the resolution declared Bernard U. Johnson elected mayor. Other declared winners listed in the resolution include Alejandra Ale Chavez (district representative No. 1), Diana Maldonado Rocha (district representative No. 3), Cynthia Boyer Trejo (district representative No. 4), Ivan Nino (district representative No. 5), Lily Limon (district representative No. 7) and Samuel Flores (judge, Municipal Court No. 4). The resolution incorporates by reference the mechanical precinct tabulations on file with the city clerk.
Representative Temo Linares made the motion to approve the canvassing resolution and Representative Rivera seconded. Verbal aye votes were recorded during the roll call: Representative Acevedo, a speaker identified as Molina, and Representative Rivera each said “aye”; the presiding officer announced the motion passed unanimously.
The resolution also notes that its adoption is “subject to the right of any candidate to contest such elections in any way provided by law.” The council recorded that Representative Canales and Representative Rivera joined the meeting after it began; the City Clerk stated the resolution would be spread on the minutes and that copies of the precinct tabulations are on file in the clerk’s office.
For public planning, council members noted a swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected members and mayor is scheduled for Jan. 6 at the Plaza Theater; city staff confirmed the ceremony will begin at 6 p.m.
The special meeting adjourned shortly after the canvass vote.
