Cartwright governing board president announces resignation; Denise Garcia accepts temporary presidency

Governing Board President Anna Bathea told the Cartwright Elementary District board on Dec. 17 that she will resign as board president for the remainder of her term and asked the board to record a temporary president until the board reorganizes in January.
Bathea read from board policy BDB — which outlines the duties of the president to preside over meetings, consult with the superintendent, place items on agendas and maintain orderly participation — and said that with both her and Vice President Marissa Hernandez not returning in January, the district needed someone in the interim to fulfill responsibilities.
The board discussed the procedural need to have a temporary president in place to work with the superintendent and executive team on agendas and emergency matters. Marissa Hernandez verbally moved to record Board Member Denise Garcia as temporary president; the governing board members agreed that the action only needed to be recorded in the minutes rather than acted on by formal roll call. Garcia responded, “I do accept the position until January when the board will do a reorganization.”
Why it matters: The temporary appointment ensures the district has an identified board officer who can collaborate with the superintendent on meeting agendas and emergency communications between now and the board’s scheduled reorganization on Jan. 16, 2025. The board noted that the district’s reorganization will occur when new or returning members take their seats and the board holds its formal reorganization process.
