Acting Superintendent Dr. Strasser told the Rapid City Area School District 51-4 Board on Jan. 7 that district staff are finalizing recommended changes to the 2025–26 calendar, including a proposed change to move graduation up one week from May 31 to May 24. He said the recommended calendar changes are expected to be brought to the board at the next meeting.
Dr. Strasser introduced Kit Pfeiff as the district’s new director of Positive School Climate and Culture. Pfeiff began work the previous week and will focus on implementing the district’s civil rights agreement and related climate and culture work, Dr. Strasser said. Pfeiff introduced herself briefly to the board during the meeting.
Dr. Strasser also reported ongoing organizational-excellence work with Studer Education and said the district’s directors have been working on timeliness and accessibility after a November district service survey. He said the midyear review tied to that work will come to the board at a February study session.
Why it matters: Moving graduation affects families’ schedules and senior-year planning and may require adjustments to staffing and facilities. Hiring a director for climate and culture signals continued district attention to equity and behavior systems tied to a civil rights agreement the district is implementing.
No formal vote on the calendar change or the hire was taken at the meeting; Dr. Strasser said final recommendations would be presented to the board at a later date.
