Board hears update on Bountiful branch planning after Matterport scan; design and land questions remain

The Davis County Library Board on Jan. 9 received an informational update on early-stage planning for a redeveloped Bountiful branch. The library’s architect completed an interior Matterport scan of the existing Bountiful building and the team plans an exterior scan; staff said the scans will inform preservation decisions and a future design package for the city.
Library staff and the architect discussed several preservation and design topics library stakeholders want considered. The meeting noted historic and character-defining elements—benches from the original headquarters, Doctor Seuss etchings in interior glass, terrazzo stairs and other features—may be incorporated into a new design where feasible. The architect and library staff plan to coordinate with Bountiful city officials and the county health department to define a land-swap or joint-campus approach for a new library building that could also accommodate a senior center.
Josh Johnson, library director, said the architect needs a current stack count and collection plan to determine how much floor space collections will require in a new building. That collection assessment will inform decisions about floorplans, story counts and whether to include a basement. The architect has met with library staff multiple times and will meet again to build an initial design envelope and to coordinate requirements for a senior center on adjacent land if the city and county pursue a joint solution.
The library also described the value of the Matterport scan as an archival record of the existing building: it permits virtual walkthroughs, helps preserve documentation of character items if they are moved to a new building, and would be useful in the event of damage to the facility.
