The revision is intended to make certain high-demand, limited-quantity items—initially telescopes donated to the system—available by hold so patrons can request and pick them up at the branch where the item is located.
Under the policy change described in the meeting, holds on these items will operate within the library’s normal pickup windows; staff noted that typical hold pickup practice is 10 days but individual items may carry different pickup windows. Board members discussed that because telescopes are relatively expensive and the donation increased the library’s telescope inventory above what it previously had, the system will limit holds to branches that have units available and will monitor usage and losses. The library said it tested similar holds and availability practices in limited branches and will scale carefully to avoid loss.
